Dr. Twomey received his B.S. degree from the University of Santa Clara, and attended graduate school in mathematics at the University of Illinois prior to earning his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. He remained at UCSF for his residency training with time out for a research fellowship at the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda. He has also had traveling research fellowships at Sahlgrenska Hospital in Goteborg, Sweden, and at the Grey Laboratory in Buckinghamshire, England.
Dr. Twomey's surgical career has spanned thirteen years as an academic surgeon with the University of California, Davis, Department of Surgery, based at the VA Medical Center in Martinez, California, followed by five years with the University of California, San Francisco, Department of Surgery, based at the San Francisco VA Hospital. In addition, Dr. Twomey served as the Associate Editor of Archives of Surgery for over a decade, and for many years as a board member of the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN).
Dr. Twomey's areas of interest/research are surgical nutrition, oncology, and experimental design/statistics.
